Lao PDR and Thailand Strengthen Cooperation on CITES Law Enforcement

Vientiane Capital, Lao PDR – 26 March 2026

The Department of Forestry under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment of Lao PDR, in collaboration with Thailand’s Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, convened a bilateral consultation meeting to enhance cooperation on law enforcement related to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

The meeting followed the outcomes of a previous bilateral discussion held on 17 March 2026 between delegations of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic and the Kingdom of Thailand. It was organized in a virtual format from Vientiane Capital and co-chaired by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Somvang Phimmavong, Director General of the Department of Forestry, alongside senior representatives from both Lao and Thai authorities, with participation from technical officials of both sides.

The primary objective of the meeting was to strengthen bilateral cooperation and promote a unified approach in enforcing CITES regulations. Both parties emphasized the importance of joint efforts to prevent, suppress, and combat transnational wildlife and plant trafficking involving species listed under CITES. Discussions focused on improving coordination mechanisms, enhancing information exchange between enforcement agencies, and fostering collaboration in cross-border investigations.

During the meeting, both sides also agreed on key future actions, including increasing public awareness through media engagement and social media platforms. This will involve the dissemination of information on transnational wildlife crime cases, particularly those involving aquatic species, wildlife, and protected plant species under CITES.

The meeting reaffirmed the shared commitment of Lao PDR and Thailand to strengthen regional cooperation in addressing illegal wildlife trade and ensuring effective implementation of international conservation obligations.
